Happy New Year!

2015 is here!

As we near the end of 2014, most in the firearms industry are crying “Good riddance!” As reported by Shooting Industry News, 2014 is being called brutal by most firearm manufacturers and dealers.

When you have players like Remington citing their sales being down 44% over 2013… yes things are not what most of us in the industry thought they would be in 2014. Remington’s revenue was down $121 million for their quarter ending in June and it did not show much improvement through a brutal summer slump.

Smith and Wesson, Ruger and many other manufacturers saw sales numbers drop in 2014 compared to 2013 which for most was a banner year. And the downturn was not limited to just the gun manufacturers either. Importers saw a downturn of  imports of 56%. August according to Shooting Industry News did show a 33% increase in imports of handguns, rifles and shotguns.

The lack of ammunition is part of the decrease in firearm sales. After all, why buy something you can’t find ammo for? But it only partially explains the numbers.

What it does mean is that the savvy consumer will be able to find great deals on firearms through at least the first part of 2015 as the overstock is handled through dealer and manufacturer rebates and incentives. Now is a good time to shop.

The training industry saw a lackluster year in 2014. All kinds of industry records were set in 2013, yet 2014 did not even come close to the numbers we saw in 2013. Like the rest of the industry, firearm instructors and their companies are looking for improvement in 2015.
